Philadelphia Area Coaches Alliance’s president, Gerrie Dresser, accepted the International Coach Federation’s award for “Local Spirit, Global Presence – Community Activism” on behalf of the PACA organization on November 3.

The award was presented by Pamela Richarde, ICF 2006 President, and Kay Cannon, ICF 2007 President at the ICF Leadership Dinner during the 11th Annual ICF Conference that was held in St. Louis, Mo. The conference was attended by more than 1,300 coaches from 33 countries.

PACA is a nonprofit organization of more than 100 professionals with interests in executive, corporate, business, nonprofit, personal, and small business coaching in the Greater Philadelphia area.

The ICF Community Activism Award recognizes a local chapter that established a significant coaching presence in their communities either by successfully creating volunteer or pro bono coaching programs that benefit a segment of their local communities or developing an alliance with a community organization that brings coaching to the community or to outreach organizations.

This award specifically recognized the contribution of the Philadelphia Area Coaches Alliance (PACA) community and coaches through PACA’s Community Coaching Connection.

Through this in-kind grant of more than $20,000 to the Family Support Services (FSS) of Upper Darby, Pa., volunteers from the Philadelphia Area Coaches Alliance provided staff members of the nonprofit Family Support Services Inc. with pro bono coaching that strengthened job focus, performance, and leadership skills.

FSS is a nonprofit that runs child welfare and early intervention programs helping 1,600 children and their families annually in Philadelphia and Delaware counties.

PACA’s Community Coaching Connection is a volunteer program through which the organization donates money and/or coaching services to a worthy nonprofit agency in Greater Philadelphia. This grant was the first that included coaching services.

Nine PACA coaches were paired with FSS supervisors and managers in one-on-one meetings twice monthly for six months.

FSS supervisors said PACA coaches were able to provide them with perspectives that helped them better organize their work, identify goals and plan to reach those goals.

Coaches worked with FSS staffers in organizing their workloads so they could make the time to refocus on some aspects of their jobs that needed more attention.

FSS supervisors said their coaching sessions also helped manage stress and helped them clarify what they wanted to do, and can do, while on the job.

One testimonial from Wilmette Reid, an FSS program director:

“The coaching gives you a magnifying glass to stop and focus on what you would like to strengthen in your program. It gave us a chance to become more efficient.”

Many thanks are extended to Bob Isaacson for his leadership and vision for this initiative and the team of coaches for their contribution: Ken Abrams; Val Boyko; Christine Coward; Val Hastings; Ginger Jarrett; Pat Kilgannon; Lisa Kramer; Jackie Lesser; Maria van Hekken

PACA is a Charter Chapter of the International Coach Federation. The ICF represents 11,000 members in 80 countries with 144 chapters and is recognized for establishing a worldwide credentialing of coaches, a Code of Ethics for the coaching profession, and promoting research about coaching.
